Piloting
The pilotage function at East Port UK is carried out by Great Yarmouth Port Company on behalf of the Great Yarmouth Port Authority. The pilotage service operates 24/7 and in 2006 carried out a total of 3800 pilotage acts for vessels visiting the port. Pilots generally board about a half mile outside the port and the average pilotage act is approximately 60 minutes.
Within the river the currents can be strong with spring rates up to 3½ knots with higher flow rates during periods of heavy rain in the Broads area or after prolonged southerly gales. Vessels with a high degree of manoeuvrability or power can enter at most states of tide. Other vessels will enter at the slack water periods
